Community Dentistry, Promoting Oral Health Across the Lifespan

Welcome to the Department of Community Dentistry

Our department is committed to attaining the mission of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. We will:

  • Educate future health care providers and scientists who reflect the diversity of our state and nation.
  • Conduct biomedical research focused on seeking information fundamental to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Provide compassionate and culturally competent state-of-the-art clinical care.
  • Promote health awareness, education and practices thereby improving the wellness of the community we serve.
  • Stimulate the life science industry in our state and nation.

Our faculty is dedicated to the promotion of oral health and prevention of disease through education, research, advocacy and community efforts. Our department has programs in epidemiology, oral disease prevention, health promotion, health services, nutrition, cariology, and sialochemistry. The department maintains funding in basic and clinical research.

The department offers a one-year full time or two-year part time residency in Dental Public Health. The program prepares the public health dentist for a career in academics, research, administration in local, state or national public health agencies, or working with foundations, non-profit organizations, and other community-based groups.
