Biographical Sketch
Dr. David P. Cappelli is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Dentistry and Director of the Dental Public Health Residency Program. Dr. Cappelli received his M.P.H. from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Public Health and D.M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine. He was awarded a certificate in Dental Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), Department of Community Dentistry and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health. Dr. Cappelli is a Diplomate of The American Board of Dental Public Health. He maintains appointments in the School of Allied Health Sciences, Department of Dental Hygiene, UT-School of Public Health, San Antonio Regional Campus, and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Cappelli teaches oral epidemiology, community-based prevention and risk-based prevention to dental students, dental hygiene students and graduate students. He has mentored Master and PhD candidates in the Dental School, Schools of Nursing, Allied Health and Public Health. Dr. Cappelli has completed a textbook titled, Prevention in Clinical Oral Health Care, which was released in October, 2007. His research interest is focused on the molecular epidemiology of oral-systemic disease linkages, especially the relationship between periodontal disease and negative birthing outcomes (preterm birth/low birth weight) and the relationship between periodontal disease and HIV. In addition, Dr. Cappelli conducted an oral health assessment of the residents of Bexar County, (San Antonio) TX in 2002 and 2006. He has authored/co-authored multiple scientific articles, as well as book chapters, symposia, and abstracts. In addition, Dr. Cappelli serves as a reviewer for professional journals, is a member of several professional organizations and academic committees. Dr. Cappelli is a member of the board of the Texas Oral Health Coalition.
