SCHOOL BASED PREVENTION COMD 50015
Freshman: Dental Students have the opportunity to participate in a public health preventive program conducted in an elementary school located in a disadvantaged neighborhood in the city of San Antonio. Dental students provide instruction to small groups of elementary school children on tooth brushing and which is complemented with nutrition information concerning healthy teeth. Approximately 630 elementary school children participate annually in this program.
Junior: Dental Students rotate to an assigned elementary school to place dental sealants to 2nd grade children who have parental consent to participate in this program. Dental students work in pairs as dental assistants and operators. Dental students learn hands-on how a school based prevention program is planned, implemented and evaluated.
