Head Start Community Based Prevention Program
This rotation applies principles learned in Community and Preventive Dentistry (COMD 5017). It provides the DSII student with an experience in caring for children in Head Start programs and to participate in a community-based prevention program aimed at caries reduction in preschool children. The Head Start Centers are operated by Parent-
Child Incorporated and are located throughout the City of San Antonio. Students will collaborate in a school-based clinical prevention program along with the Department of Dental Hygiene, School of Allied Health Sciences and with dentists from the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. At each center, the dental student will assess each child's oral health status and apply fluoride varnish. Children who are participating in this program will have been identified by the administration at the Head Start Center and will have had a previous dental examination.
