Dr. Segura graduated from dental school in 1990 from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. She then completed a general practice residency program in 1991 from Miami Veterans Hospital in Florida. She received her certificate and masters degree in Pediatric Dentistry in 1993 from the University of Iowa. She was the director of the General Practice Residency and Hospital Dentistry at the University of Iowa from 1993 through 1999. She was the Predoctoral Director of the Pediatric Dentistry Program from 1999 to 2005 at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). She is currently a Professor and the Interim-Chair for the Department of Community Dentistry at the UTHSCSA and the Director of Ricardo Salinas Clinic. She also holds additional appointments as Professor, in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and the Department of Pediatrics.
Dr. Segura is the author and co-author of over 50 published articles, chapters and abstracts in a broad spectrum of scientific journals. She has frequently been a lecturer, not only in the United States, but on the international scene (Latin America, Central America, and Mexico). Dr. Segura is a Diplomat of the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a fellow of the American Society of Dentistry for Children and in 2002 was elected to membership in OKU (Dental Honor Society). She was also honored by being accepted to the American College of Dentists in 2005. She has served as Chair of the Curriculum Management Committee from 2001-2004 and has served on the Strategic planning committee for the UTHSCSA Dental School since 1999. She was the Chair of Pediatric Section of American Dental Education Association and a past President of the San Antonio Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. In 2003, she was honored by the San Antonio Business Journal with the Award of “40 under 40”. This award is given to individuals who have contributed significantly to their community. She was selected for the Faculty -at- Large position on the Executive Committee of the University of Texas Health Science Center in 2003. In 2004, she was selected to the Texas Leadership Program. In 2005, she was selected for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Kellogg Leadership Program. She currently serves on the Committee on Scientific Affairs for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and on the Executive Committee of the Section on Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Health for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Segura’s research interest is in cariology and in fluoride. Her research has being funded by private and federal sources. She is currently funded from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research entitled, “Early Caries Detection and Intervention”.
