UTHSCSA ENT Student Interest Group

The UTHSCSA ENT Club was established in 2004 for medical students with a common interest in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery to learn more about the different aspects of this exciting specialty.  Since its inception, the club's small, dedicated membership has shared the goal of promoting this specialty among UTHSCSA medical students.  Because otolaryngology has traditionally been known as a competitive surgical sub-specialty, the club has also served as a valuable forum for students at different stages of their medical educations to receive support and gain knowledge from fellow club members as well as department faculty members and residents regarding what they should do to make themselves the most attractive applicants to residency programs.

There are several events that occur during the year in which club members can exclusively participate.   The suture clinic is an outstanding way for members to interact with faculty and residents while mastering the most common flaps used in facial plastic reconstructive surgery on a pig foot model.   The scope clinic has also proven to be a great way for club members to grasp the basic techniques involved in manipulating endoscopes to examine each other's upper aerodigestive tracts in a clinical setting.   Traditionally, the yearly highlight has been the Pappasito's dinner each April with department faculty and residents.  This event has provided an excellent environment to further facilitate the development of relationships.   The ENT Club has undoubtedly allowed medical students to interact more closely with the UTHSCSA Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery while gaining greater insight into this dynamic specialty.
