School of Dentistry History and Mission
The School of Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, now known as UT Health San Antonio, has been educating dental professionals for more than 40 years. We believe in the acquisition, dissemination and use of knowledge toward the enhancement of oral health.
In 2015, the School of Dentistry opened the Center for Oral Health Care and Research. This four-story, 198,000-square foot state-of-the-art clinic is the location for our students’, residents’, faculty and patients’ clinical experiences. This new facility, the first for the School of Dentistry since its first building was opened in 1972, is now open to students and patients.
We are proud of our research scientists, who develop cutting-edge studies on pain and inflammation, salivary diagnostics, stem-cell regeneration of dental tissues, bone regeneration, dental public health and prevention and much more. We believe in service learning: Our students, residents and clinicians serve patients throughout San Antonio and South Texas to give much-needed oral health services to many who would be unable to receive oral health care.
The School of Dentistry has been accredited since 1978. The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) re-accredited the school in February 2012; our next accreditation visit is scheduled for 2019.
