Krystal Polanco Class of 2015
Krystal Polanco, a San Antonio native, graduated from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Science in Poultry Science. She went on to be an antimicrobial and food safety researcher for the USDA for three years, and was originally on track to become a full-time scientist in food safety.
After a string of budget cuts, however, it was time to make a change. She decided to transfer her scientific expertise into the field of respiratory care. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, now known as UT Health San Antonio, was the only institution she applied to — she knew it was the best place to start her new journey.
Krystal likes the mix of freedom and structure that is offered in the respiratory care field. The respiratory care department at UT Health San Antonio keeps students enthusiastic about opportunities through relationship-building by bringing in recruiters from hospitals in the city. The department helps students find internships with hospitals that offer the specialization where students can see themselves working. It’s through those relationships that many students receive job offers and opportunities once they graduate.
Krystal puts her expertise in action by volunteering at The Urban Surge Free Asthma Clinic.
