Taylor D. Buchanan
Taylor D. Buchanan Class of 2021
Taylor Buchanan was born and raised in Raymondville, Texas down in the Rio Grande Valley. He received his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2017. During his undergrad, he had the incredible opportunity to visit 11 countries on four continents while living on a ship through a program called Semester at Sea.
He became interested in physical therapy since high school, so he sought out a local pediatric therapy clinic (Kids Skills pediatric Therapy Center in Raymondville, Texas) that practices physical, occupational, and speech therapies where he did observation hours. During his time there, however, he found his attention constantly being pulled into the occupational therapy department because the kids seemed so much interested and engaged during their OT session. "It wasn't until my undergraduate education where I learned about OT's holistic approach for clients and catering occupational needs to the culture and context of each person that I knew OT was the place I wanted to be. The activities of focus are patient-specific and of special importance to each individual. For me, occupational therapy was the perfect balance of physical rehabilitation with the incorporation of mental wellness I was looking for. " he said.
He always wanted to attend UT Health San Antonio due to the great respect individuals from every field of medicine have for the school as an entity. "I have many friends who have come through and graduated from UT Health San Antonio in various programs from dental to medical research to OT, and each new graduate speaks so highly of their education and the invaluable experience they gained while studying here. UT Health San Antonio has been on the frontier of innovative medical research and continuously advocates for technological discoveries and ways to improve quality of life, an area of particular interest to the field of occupational therapy," he said.
