Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching

Scholarship of Teaching Grants

Scholarship of Teaching has been defined as having three critical elements: 1. a tangible or electronic product, 2. peer reviewed for quality, and 3.publicly disseminated for others to use and build upon¹. In order to enhance the Scholarship of Teaching at UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, the Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching (ACET) provides a Scholarship of Teaching Grants (STG) Program. Over sixty faculty members from across multiple disciplines at the UT Health Science Center have received STG awards since 1996. STG awards have been used for a variety of projects including developing computer-based learning modules, Web-based courses, pilot-testing new strategies to evaluate student competence, environmental health and safety and conducting research to measure the effectiveness of educational strategies.
The Scholarship of Teaching Grants (STG) Program provides start-up grants to support faculty efforts to develop innovative educational or evaluation methods with the goal of improving educational methodology and learning outcomes. The program provides financial support up to a maximum of $5,000 per project.

STG applications are awarded on a competitive basis. The applications are reviewed and selected for funding by a multidisciplinary panel of faculty representatives from all UTHSCSA schools and other academic support units, along with the Academic Technology Services (ATS) Advisory Committee.
