Activities
The UTHSCSA Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching provides leadership, direction, and resources to advance excellence in teaching.
1. Promoting the Scholarship of Teaching
- Conduct workshops and seminars on educational research methods and skills
- Provide individual consultation related to educational research
- Introduce evaluation-driven methods for instructional development
- Award grants for educational research projects
- Provide information resources on research in teaching and funding opportunities for such research
2. Enhancing Excellence in Teaching
- Develop faculty instructional skills:
- Conduct workshops and seminars related to effective instruction
- Provide individual consultation related to effective teaching
- Assist faculty in accessing resources for best educational practices
- Provide information resources related to faculty development of instructional skills
- Develop faculty proficiency in constructing teaching portfolios
- Conduct workshops for Deans and Chairs related to school and departmental teaching policies, practices, and evaluation
- Assist curriculum committees with planning and outcomes assessment
3. Developing and Mentoring Teaching Assistants (broadly defined)
- Credentialing
- Provide information resources on function and activities of teaching assistants
4. Enhancing Student Learning Skills
- Conduct workshops and seminars, e.g., on study skills and test taking
- Provide individual consultation related to effective learning strategies
- Assist students in accessing resources for effective and efficient learning
- Assess student learning
5. Applying Technology in Teaching and Learning
- Promote effective teaching and learning through use of instructional technology
- Collaborate with schools and departments to encourage curricular innovation and interdisciplinary courses
- Maximize utilization of HSC resources to support teaching and learning, including library resources
6. Evaluating and Rewarding Excellence in Teaching
- Construct formal mentoring and development processes for faculty
- Create interdisciplinary standards for documenting teaching excellence
- Develop resources to assess teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes in relation to teaching excellence.
- Assess excellence in teaching coupled to learning outcomes
- Standardize measurement approaches to teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes
- Recognize and reward excellent teachers
- Assist faculty and department chairs with methods to document teaching excellence
7. Monitoring the Physical Teaching and Learning Environment
- Assess and make recommendations regarding physical environment factors that support the education mission
