UTHSCSA Quality Enhancement Plan: Project Overview
UTHSCSA is undergoing its 10 year accreditation review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The SACS Accreditation process requires the University to increase the effectiveness of student learning in one of its educational programs through a comprehensive Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The purpose of QEP is to encourage creative, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences for students. SACS guidelines require QEP projects to be aligned with one or more elements of the UTHSCSA Strategic Plan: 1. Interdisciplinary education, 2. Active learning strategies, 3. Community-based learning, 4. Measurement of learning outcomes, and 5. Use of electronic information sources and digital tools in courses. On September 7, 2006, a request for QEP proposals was sent to all UTHSCSA faculty. The request specified that to be successful a QEP proposal must be part of an existing or future accredited academic curriculum at UTHSCSA. Proposals should use a five-year time frame and could address the expansion of an existing educational program, or the design and implementation of a new educational program. Financial support of up to a total of $100,000 in UTHSCSA funds was available over two to five years. One-page pre-proposals were requested by October 6. Ten pre-proposals were received by the October 6 deadline. Dr. John Littlefield, Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching (ACET), met individually with the 10 authors and encouraged several of them to consider merging their projects. Six QEP final proposals were received by the January 4, 2007 deadline using a pre-specified format. Table 1 is a list of the six project titles. Table 1 – Six QEP Final Proposals
The six proposals were critiqued by a panel of eight faculty from the Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching (ACET) Steering Council using an NIH Study Section review model. The reviewers were Dr. Bill Clarke (Pharmacology), Dr. Bob Esterl (Transplant Center), Dr. Lisa Lang (Prosthodontics), Dr. Linda Porter-Wenzlaff (Chronic Nursing), Dr. Adriana Segura Donly (Community Dentistry), Ms. Cheryl Staats (Acute Nursing), Dr. Kristine Vogel (Cellular & Structural Biology) and Dr. Don Willmann (Periodontics). The reviewers selected Development of a Case-based Virtual Information System Healthcare Education Resource. This project was reviewed by the SACS Leadership Team, the UTHSCSA Faculty Senate, and the UTHSCSA Executive Committee prior to official selection as the official QEP Project on May 3, 2007. A seven member interdisciplinary team is now developing the Virtual Information System (VIS) project: Drs. Kristen Fiebelkorn and Jaishree Jagirdar (Pathology / Co-chairs), Dr. Vid Desibhatla (Nursing), Mr. Ray Howard (ACET), Dr. Kristy Kosub, (Medicine), Dr. John Littlefield (ACET), Dr. Stan McGuff (Pathology), Dr. Dubravko Pavlin (Orthodontics), and Dr. Srinivasa Prasad (Radiology). Additional faculty will be added to the team as the project evolves. The VIS team will develop an internet-accessible case-based virtual info system that displays patient history and physical exam info plus diagnostic tests and images of pathology, radiology, and endoscopic evaluations. Students will work through a case by viewing a patient introduction then requesting additional information as they attempt to diagnose and manage the patient’s problem. Pilot testing of the system is scheduled for Fall, 2008, a major expansion in Fall, 2009, and full implementation in Fall, 2010. For more information contact Dr Kristen Fiebelkorn (567-3100) or Dr. Jaishree Jagirdar (567-4034). . . . Return to top . . .
