How much does it cost to attend ERD courses?
There is no registration fee or other charges for all full and part-time UTHSCSA
faculty to participate in professional development courses conducted by ERD, including the TEXAS Series and UTEC.
However, enrollment in courses is on a first come - first serve basis so early
registration is encouraged.

How much does it cost to receive consultation
services from
ERD staff?
There is no charge for consultation provided by ERD staff for projects that are
not sponsored by a grant from an external funding source (such as NIH, NSF or a
private foundation). Each year, ERD staff support many externally funded
educational development, program evaluation, training and research projects. The
costs (often a percent time FTE) for ERD staff support and services to these
funded projects are negotiated prior to submission of the grant application. If
you anticipate the need for ERD staff on an externally funded project, please
contact ERD during preparation of the grant application.
Does ERD work with faculty from all schools at UTHSCSA or just with some schools?
ERD has an open door policy and works with faculty from all schools and
departments at the UTHSCSA. The mission of ERD is to serve as a core, campuswide
support unit for academic programs throughout the health science center. At
times, certain ERD staff may be dedicated to a specific project in one school
because the project is externally funded through a particular department.
However, when this happens other ERD staff are available to work with faculty
from the other schools on campus. We have considerable cross training within ERD
so there are several staff members who can work on almost any task.

How do faculty register for UTEC?
Announcements and the UTEC registration form
are sent to the UTHSCSA faculty by e-mail approximately 6-8 weeks prior to the
start of the course, typically in August. Follow-up announcements appear in The
NEWS (UTHSCSA campus paper) 2-4 weeks before each program.
How do faculty register for TEXAS workshops?
Announcements and registration
information / forms are sent to the UTHSCSA faculty by e-mail six weeks prior to
each workshop in the annual TEXAS schedule. Follow-up announcements appear in
The NEWS (UTHSCSA campus paper) 2-4 weeks before each workshop. At the start of
each academic year (August), electronic and paper messages are also sent to
academic program leaders with TEXAS workshop descriptions that can be posted on
departmental bulletin boards. The workshops in the TEXAS Series are also listed
on the calendar of campus events in The NEWS.

Can I get one-on-one help with my teaching or
assistance planning a
course from ERD?
YES - Historically, the bulk of ERDs day-to-day consultation services for
faculty
relate to personal teaching enhancement, planning new courses, or modifying
courses. In ERDs VISIT program, faculty can arrange to have ERD staff observe
their classroom, lab or clinic teaching and then receive feedback and
consultation. Contact Bill Hendricson
(7-2813) for more information about the VISIT program.

If I want to develop a Web-based course, what kinds
of assistance can ERD
provide to me?
ERD staff can provide assistance in three areas:
Skill development: ERD help faculty increase their knowledge of web-based course
development and other multi-media skills by one-on-one consultation and/or
hands-on workshops/training.
Web Course Development: ERD staff provide consultation on overall course design, management of the development
effort which often involves several media production personnel, software programming services, and field testing of prototypes.
Manage Web-based Courses: ERD staff assist faculty in establishing web-based
courses on the dedicated SALUD server and then manage the courses.

If ERD helps me develop a Web-based course, how
much will it
cost?
There is no charge for consultation and support for web-courses provided by ERD
staff for projects that are not sponsored by a grant from an external funding
source (such as NIH, NSF or a private foundation). However, there may be media
production charges (graphics, video production, digitizing video clips, etc) from
other support units on campus who are involved in project development. ERD can
help you estimate these costs prior to commencing production of the web course.
If you have received funding from an outside agency to develop the web-based
course, ERD will require compensation for consultation services provided by our
staff. ERD staff can assist you in developing a budget for the grant application

What projects are beyond the scope of
ERD?
The mission of ERD is to support the academic programs of The UTHSCSA by
providing services in the six areas indicated below and described in more detail
elsewhere at this website. It is beyond the scope of our operations to provide
support for non-educational projects such as basic science or clinical research
protocols or writing grants that have non-educational objectives. Of course, ERD
staff are only available to work on projects that are directly related to the
missions of the UTHSCSA and for the faculty and students of the HSC.
If you have questions about whether ERD can help you with a project, please
contact Bill Hendricson at ext. 7-2813.
