Scholarship of Teaching Grants (STG)
(formerly Innovative Teaching Grants - ITG)

spacer

In 1990, Ernest Boyer argued that if universities are to continue advancing forward, a new vision of scholarship is required. Four distinct classifications were developed from this model - Scholarship of Discovery (research), Scholarship of Integration, Scholarship of Application, and Scholarship of Teaching. More recently, the Scholarship of Teaching has been defined as having three critical elements: 1. a tangible or electronic product, 2. peer reivewed for quality, and 3. publicly disseminated for others to use and build upon.(1) In order to enhance the Scholarship of Teaching at UTHSCSA, the Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching is providing a grant program for faculty.

The Scholarship of Teaching Grants (STG) Program provides start-up grants to support faculty efforts to increase scholarly teaching. The STG program provides financial support in the range of $2,500 to $10,000 per project. Fifty-five UTHSCSA faculty members have received Teaching Grant awards since 1996. Previous awards have been used for a variety of projects including developing computer-based learning modules or Web-based courses, pilot-testing new strategies to evaluate student competence, and conducting research to measure the effectiveness of educational strategies.

The Scholarship of Teaching Grants are awarded on a competitive basis. The call for applications will be sent to faculty on February 12, 2007. The deadline for STG proposal submission is May 1, 2007; awards will be presented on September 1, 2007. The Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching (ACET) Advisory Committee, which is composed of faculty representatives from all UTHSCSA schools and academic support units, reviews the STG applications and selects the projects to be funded.

To obtain a STG application or obtain additional information about this program, please contact Dr. David L. Henzi at campus phone 7-2290 or by e-mail at henzi@uthscsa.edu.
