February 20, 2008 – “Airway Ultrasound” William W. Lunn, MD, Assistant Dean, Clinical Affairs, Director, Interventional Pulmonary, Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas This lecture will discuss the physics of airway ultrasound as well as take a look at clinical utility in detail. The speaker will give participants a review of airway ultrasound. Limitations will be reviewed and comments regarding future directions in this field. The audience will look at limitations and also discuss comments for future directions.
March 19, 2008 – “Pediatric Asthma – Devices and Inhaled Corticosteriods” Sheldon Spier, MD, FRCP(C), Head, Division Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Alberta Children’s Hospital, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada This presentation will review the metabolism of various ICS’s and how they differ. We will also discuss and review different devices and touch base on where medication is deposited in the patient (metered dose inhaler, dry powder inhaler, jet nebulizer). The speaker will review and discuss how to relate the device to the ICS and how that affects benefit and the side effects. Factors leading to good adherence, particularly with regards to the device selection will also be discussed.
April 16, 2008 – "Physiologic Effects of Aging” J.M. Cairo, PhD, RRT, FAARC, Dean and Professor, Louisiana State University Health Science Center, School of Allied Health Professions, New Orleans, Louisiana The aging of the American population will present unique challenges for healthcare in the near future. As such, the scope of practice for respiratory care will certainly change to meet these challenges. Respiratory care educational programs will also have to design their curricula to include greater emphasis placed on how these changes will impact the respiratory therapist scope of practice during the coming decades.
May 21, 2008 – “Smoking and Mental Illness: Understanding the Relationship and Improving Cessation Interventions” Mary Kathleen Gilley, MA, LPC, RRT, TTS, Instructor, University of Toledo, Licensed Professional Counselor, Kettlie Joseph Daniels, Md., Inc, Waterville, Ohio You may not know that between 60% and 95% of individuals with a history of mental illness smoke cigarettes in comparison of 21% of the total population. Individuals with a history of mental illness also smoke more heavily, have a higher chance of developing lung disease, and have a lower quit rate than individuals without a history of mental illness. This presentation will discuss the relationship between nicotine, mental illness and smoking. Smoking cessation interventional techniques will also be presented.
June 18, 2008 – “Medical Malpractice: How to Avoid your Day in Court” Terry S. LeGrand, PhD, RRT, FAARC, Faculty, Instructor of Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and General Comparative Physiology, Louisiana State University, Shreveport, Louisiana This presentation will focus on the potential role of the respiratory therapist or other health care provider in the event of a lawsuit of medical malpractice. All health care professionals are ultimately responsible for the well-being of their patients, and it is important to know, not only how to respond if involved in a lawsuit, as a material witness or as a co-defendant, but how to prevent being involved in one in the first place. July 16, 2008 – “Updates to the Management of Pediatric Asthma” Ashley Dulle, BS, RRT,AE-C, Instructor, Department of Cardiopulmonary Science, Louisiana State University Health Sciences, Shreveport, Louisiana This lecture will cover current management and treatment strategies for asthma based on the latest Global Initiatives for Asthma and the 2007 National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Expert Panel Guidelines. Emphasis will be placed on innovative avenues to educate pediatric patients and their families on the management and treatment of asthma.

September 17, 2008 – “Ventilator Associated Pneumonia” Anna Elizondo-Santiago, BS, BSRC, RRT, Instructor, University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, Respiratory Care, Laredo, Texas The presentation will review the current practice regarding ventilator associated pneumonia and the use of normal saline instillation, significance of HOB, and use of suction devices. The speaker will review common factors associated to ventilator associated pneumonia. The lecture concludes by making some recommendations based on the clinical practice guidelines.
October 15, 2008 – “Quitting Smoking is as Important as which Drug you use to Treat the Patient with Lung Cancer” Carolyn Dresler, MD, MPA, Associate Professor, College of Public Health, University of Arkansas Medical Sciences and Branch Chief, Tobacco Prevention & Cessation Branch, Arkansas Department of Health, Little Rock, Arkansas This presentation will review that it is not too late for someone with lung cancer to stop smoking. We will also look at how health care providers should always be working with their patients to help them and encouragement them to stop smoking. We will also see many tips on how to help patients stop smoking.
November 19, 2008 – “Motivational Interviewing: Helping our Patients Prepare for Change” Mary Kathleen Gilley, MA, LPC, RRT, TTS, Instructor, University of Toledo, Licensed Professional Counselor, Kettle Joseph Daniels, MD, Inc., Waterville Ohio Historically, smoking cessation was provided as though the smoker was ready to quite smoking, but research reveals that only 20% of smokers are ready to stop. Eighty percent of smokers are not at the quit stage. Motivational interviewing is a technique that can be employed at every stage of change that can help move the smoker to the quite stage, and help the former smoker stay stopped. This program will present information for providing motivational interviewing techniques that are stage of change appropriate.
December 17, 2008 – “Using Six Sigma and Lean Concepts to Resolve Process Issues in Your Department” Mark Randolph, MBA, RRT, RPFT, Assistant Hospital Administrator, Professional Services, Louisiana State University Health Science Center, Shreveport, Louisiana Respiratory Care Managers deal with a multitude of issues each day including physician complaints, response time for service requests as well as trying to manage costs. All of these issues also impact staff morale so the need to find solutions is critical. There are tools available to help managers develop solutions to these problems. Six Sigma and Lean concepts are essentially systematic approaches to revolving process related issues in any organization. This presentation will provide an overview of methods to systematically measure, analyze and improve systems. Example related to operation of a Respiratory Care Department will also be discussed.
