Breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1) is recognized as a tumor suppressor mainly because it participates in DNA damage response and maintains genome integrity. However, these activities of BRCA1 can not explain why BRCA1 mutation carriers develop tumors in specific tissues rather than in broad spectrum. - My project is designed to solve this puzzle from the angle of BRCA1-associated gene regulation. Specifically, how does BRCA1 regulate aromatase expression? Aromatase is the key enzyme that converts androgen to estrogen. Stromal aromatase is responsible for local biosynthesis of estrogen and contributes to tumor growth in postmenopausal women.
