The Department of Cellular and Structural Biology is dedicated to supporting the professional teaching mission of UTHSCSA to educate a diverse student body to become excellent health care providers and scientists by:
  • offering foundation knowledge courses in the Anatomical Sciences.
  • the production of interactive teaching software.
  • the development and integration of new technologies into traditional laboratory oriented courses.
  • training future educators in the Anatomical Sciences.
The Department has one of the largest commitments of any basic science department to the teaching of basic science courses offered to the health professions. Included are courses in Gross Anatomy and Embryology, Microscopic Anatomy and Neuroscience. These are laboratory courses which involve the staffing of multiple labs to accommodate all students and delivery of relevant lectures.

The department has a dedicated core of approximately 20 faculty who direct and teach in these courses with many having multiple assignments. In addition, the department offers a Masters track in Anatomy that prepares students for a variety of academic and professional careers. The department and its faculty continue to be recognized for superb courses and teaching efforts. Innovative teaching projects are a major interest and focus to further enhance our teaching mission.
