Art and Anatomy Workshop Spring 2009
The Art and Anatomy Workshop was developed by:
- Charleen M. Moore, Ph.D., from the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology, UTHSCSA;
- Constance Lowe, MFA, from the Department of Art and Art History, UTSA;
- Jayne Lawrence, MFA, from the Department of Art and Art History, UTSA;
- Penelope Borchers, MLS, from the UTHSCSA Briscoe Library.
The goal of the workshop was to provide an interaction between UTHSCSA medical and UTSA art students that helped them develop ways to "see" the body more acutely. The workshop consisted of three sessions.
Session One presented an introduction to basic drawing techniques using plastinated specimens from the anatomical collection in the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology
Session Two presented an introduction to perspective and proportion of the human face, using each other's faces as models for this exercise.
Session Three presented an introduction to important anatomists/artists from the Renaissance to the present, examining many of the famous anatomical texts in the UTHSCSA Briscoe Library's P.I. Nixon rare book collection, and to contemporary artists whose work involves anatomy, medicine, and the body.
