Dr. Richards became a full-time faculty member in the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology in the fall of 2001. He is a teacher of Gross Anatomy and Embryology for both first year medical and first year dental students. He also co-teaches several other courses in Gross Anatomy which include: several senior medical students' elective courses in Advanced Gross Anatomy, a dental course in Topics in Head and Neck Anatomy, and a course in Gross Anatomy for Graduate Students and Allied Health Students.

 

Before he became a full-time faculty member at UTHSCSA, Dr. Richards was an Adjunct Professor in Gross Anatomy for first year medical students at UTHSCSA. He was also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at UTHSCSA for several years.

 

The UTHSCSA freshmen dental students have awarded Dr. Richards the Professor of the Year Award several times including the Class of 2011. The dental students have also awarded him the Dental School Faculty Assembly Teaching Excellence Award.

 

The UTHSCSA medical students have awarded Dr. Richards the Gender Equity Award and the AMWA Barbara Sanford Memorial Award. He was chosen by the senior medical class of 2005 for charter membership in the UTHSCSA Gold Humanism Honor Society. The senior medical students have awarded him an Outstanding Faculty Award several times. He recently was awarded the Teacher of the Year Award by the medical class of 2011.

 

Dr. Richards receives the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching from William Henrich, Interim President of UTHSCSA. In the Spring of 2009, Dr. Richards received the University of Texas Health Science Center's Presidential Teaching Excellence Award given to selected faculty from the UTHSCSA.
