Enrichment Electives Course Description
ELEC 5022 History of Anatomy This History of Anatomy course is designed to acquaint medical, dental and graduate students with the history of medicine and especially with the physicians and scientists who made essential discoveries in human anatomy. Using a biographical approach, the course is presented as a seminar with lectures, assigned readings and student presentations.
Topics Covered in History of Anatomy (ELEC 5022 & CSBL 5015):
One of the highlights of this course is a visit to the
P.I. Nixon Medical History Library collection in the UTHSCSA Briscoe Library. The library has an extensive collection of rare medical books, including classics such as a first edition of Vesalius’ De humani corporis fabrica published in 1543. During this visit, the library staff makes many richly illustrated texts available to the students that document the development of anatomical illustration.
