Cellular & Structural Biology Mission

The mission of the Department of Cellular & Structural Biology is to serve Texas citizens by improving health care through biomedical research, providing excellent training for students in health care fields and health-related disciplines and providing service to support and enhance research and teaching activities.

The Department will fulfill its mission by:

  1. providing a stimulating, collegial and collaborative environment for scientists to conduct state-of-the-art biomedical research,
  2. providing excellent training for the next generation of biomedical research scientists by offering graduate programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees,
  3. providing outstanding courses in anatomical sciences to students in all schools of the Health Science Center, and
  4. participate in and lead service activities that support and enhance teaching and biomedical research endeavors.

About Cellular & Structural Biology

  • 31 primary faculty, 6 research faculty, 38 secondary-appointed and adjunct faculty
  • Provides instruction for the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Allied Health, and the Graduate School.
  • 30 courses are directed by the faculty
  • 75% of the faculty maintain federally funded research programs
  • The department receives over $11 million in extramural research funding
  • CSB is consistently ranked in the top third of all cell/molecular biology departments in the nation for total NIH funding

CSB Graduate Programs
  • Ph.D. program enrolls 5-8 students per year
  • Master's programs available in Anatomical Sciences and Biotechnology - Anatomical Sciences program prepares individuals to teach; Biotechnology program prepares students to work in the biotechnology industry
  • Current students are from all over U.S. and international students are from Peru, China, India, and Spain
  • 40% of students are women
  • Strong and active Hispanic minority community
  • Scholarship and fellowship programs are available to minority students
  • M.D./Ph.D. training is available
  • Currently, there are 40 graduate students and 17 postdoctoral trainees and scholars
