CSB Research Facilities

Teaching Space - Research Facility The Department of Cellular & Structural Biology occupies 34,000 square feet of research and office space in addition to teaching space. The Department and its research laboratories are a biotechnological resource available for qualified scientists in the University, state and region.

Optical Imaging Core - Research Facility The laboratories house instrumentation for a world class facility that is available for Optical Imaging of all kinds:

  • digitized video microscopy;
  • confocal microscopy
  • fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy,
  • multiphoton excitation microscopy.

  •

    A new shared cell/tissue culture facility serves the tissue culture requirements of the Department. It contains hoods for sterile culture, inverted microscopes, incubators and cell microinjection equipment. A complete dish washing, sterilization facility and cold room supports the facility.

    Instrumentation for modern cell and molecular biological research is widely available in the Department, including equipment for preparative and ultracentrifugation; gel electrophoresis, high performance liquid chromatography and fast protein liquid chromatography; spectrophotometry and spectrofluorophotometry; scintillation counting; calorimetry; autoradiography; immunocytochemistry; radioimmunoassay; membrane and protein purification; DNA cloning and sequencing (gel scanners, phosphoimager); in situ hybridization and other techniques of modern tissue, cell and molecular biology.

    Photos - Research Facility Newly renovated first year graduate student offices are equipped with a computer/printer and internet access and each student has their own desk/shelf space. The Department also maintains its own library with up-to-date collections of scientific journals.

    Photos - Research Facility The Department has an established Research-Teaching Fellowship Program in Cellular & Structural Biology to provide research and teaching experience to postdoctoral-level investigators to prepare them for faculty positions in cellular and biostructural sciences. Fellows carry out research under the guidance of participating faculty members in the following areas: cell biology, aging, neurobiology, reproductive biology, molecular biology, biostructural imaging, endocrinology, molecular biophysics, toxicology, histology, gross anatomy and genetics. Salary support for fellows is shared by the Department and grants of faculty members sponsoring the Fellows. All departmental equipment and facilities are available to the Fellows.
