The South Texas Area Health Education Center serves as the Program Office that provides
administrative, fiscal and programmatic oversight to five regional Centers.

Mission
The South Texas AHEC Program is committed to improving the health status and quality of life for residents of South Texas. Our mission is to improve access to culturally competent and quality health care through appropriate preparation, composition, and distribution of the health professional workforce in a primarily underserved and highly impoverished 38 counties of South Texas.
Goals
- To maintain and improve the established administrative relationship with practitioners, community leaders, and educational institutions.
- To support the Bureau of Health Professional’s National Workforce Goal of improving access to quality health care through appropriate preparation, composition, and distribution of the health professional workforce.
- To increase the number of primary care physicians and other health professionals by developing strong “pipeline” programs throughout South Texas.
- To conduct training programs for health professionals and students in health professions schools to improve health care by understanding the cultural barriers and challenges faced by South Texas Border populations.
- To develop relationships with practitioners and community-based researchers to improve health care by disseminating research findings relevant to the population.
1. The South Texas Area Health Education Program and Centers (AHEC) of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio are pleased to announce the first annual South Texas Health and Education Summit to be held in San Antonio, Texas at the Omni Hotel on October 9-11, 2011. The purpose of this Summit is to inform and engage participants in a community learning environment to strategize on issues to improve access to quality healthcare, and improve healthcare by understanding the cultural barriers and other challenges faced by South Texas/ Border populations.
The invited participants to the Summit represent health agencies, community leaders, health professionals, and elected officials from the thirty-eight county region of South Texas defined by the South Texas AHEC Program. The Summit will generate discussions about the current state of the economy, federal and state funding for health care, the 2010 census data, and other factors influencing our future in South Texas. The outcome is to develop an action plan to collectively address, implement and achieve objectives to improve the distribution, supply, and quality of health care with intent to improve the quality of life for citizens residing in South Texas.
The Program will begin with a keynote address given by Dr. Steve Murdock, former Director of the US Census Bureau and Texas State Demographer, who will set the stage for discussions in work groups.

2. 2012 National Area Health Education Center Organization (NAO) Conference The South Texas AHEC Program team submitted a winning proposal and San Antonio was chosen as the site of the 2012 NAO Conference! The NAO is the national organization that supports and advances the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) network in improving the health of individuals and communities by transforming health care through education.
The program will include keynote addresses and plenary sessions by national leaders in health care, concurrent workshops and poster sessions with skilled presenters. The 2012 NAO Conference promises to be excellent and filled with abundant opportunities for professional growth and networking with colleagues. Continue to check our website for updates.
