The School of Allied Health Sciences
Our nine departments include nationally ranked programs in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Deaf Education and Hearing Science, Dental Hygiene, and Dental Laboratory Technology Sciences, Emergency Health Sciences, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies and Respiratory Care. We provide education, training and clinical care services that are vital to preventive medicine practices and the patient healing and recovery process.
Community Care: An Interdisciplinary Outreach Program
As part of The Department of Respiratory Care, patients with breathing problems work one-on-one with Respiratory Therapists who implement treatments to meet their personal needs including disease education and management, proper medication usage, infection control and energy conservation techniques. To enhance the healing process, Physical and Occupational Therapists are also on staff.
Excellence in Education
The vision of this program is to improve the quality of life and increase longevity, especially in underserved communities along the Texas-Mexico Border. The first ever joint degree nutrition program has been established by The School of Allied Health Sciences and Texas A&M International University in Laredo. As partners, they are responding to the state and nationwide crisis in obesity and chronic diseases with a joint baccalaureate and master’s degree in dietetics and nutrition.
Research with a Strong, National Impact
The mission of The Texas Consortium for Chronic Disease Prevention (TCCDP) is to prevent or reduce the incidence of chronic diseases in children and adults through healthy nutrition and physical activity, research, education, patient care and outreach. An emphasis is placed on obesity, diabetes type 2 and cancer. The TCCDP brings together the outstanding scientific research and educational expertise of faculty members from The UT Health Science Center, The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center- Science Park, The University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas A&M International University.
Opportunities for Investors
Today, there is a critical shortage of allied health care professionals, and that need has resulted in delays in the opening of rehabilitation facilities, increased medical costs and intense competition among employers, because allied health professionals provide both preventative health care and the rehabilitation services essential to the healing and recovery process. Ninety-five percent of our students are employed before they graduate and 90% remain in South Texas to practice.
