In 2009 Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR) contributed $2 million to The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to create a Distinguished University Chair in Urology – the highest endowed faculty position available at the Health Science Center.
“With this gift, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is making a significant investment in the health of Rio Grande Valley residents,” said William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president of the Health Science Center. “This collaboration between the Health Science Center and local physicians will better lives, and in some cases will save lives. We are grateful to Doctors Hospital for its generosity.”
Dr. Parekh was named the first holder of this Distinguished University Chair. He travels to the Rio Grande Valley regularly to provide care to patients at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in McAllen.
"The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Distinguished University Chair in Urology has enabled our two institutions to jointly provide exceptional care to patients and to develop scientific programs that are changing the way medicine will be practiced in the future,” said Ian Thompson, Jr., M.D, Director of the UT Health Science Center’s Cancer Therapy & Research Center in San Antonio. “I have already seen scientific discoveries, presented at national meetings by Dr. Parekh, that have led to enhancements in patient care around the world. This partnership is a tribute to the visionary leadership of our friends and colleagues at DHR whose vision of a cancer-free world we share."
