These special diagnostic laboratory services are provided as a resource to South Texas:

Optometry: Routine comprehensive eye examinations are provided by a therapeutic optometrist by appointment Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. A comprehensive eye examination includes, but is not limited to, measurement of vision, eye muscle testing, color vision testing and measurement for the need of an optical prescription for eye glasses. Additionally, following a measurement of pressure inside the eye to check for glaucoma , the eyes are dilated to check for cataracts and other eye diseases. In the event an eye disease is detected, an appointment is setup with an ophthalmologist. If eye glasses are needed, a prescription is provided. The UT Eye consultants Optical Dispensary is located adjacent to the Optometry Clinic for your convenience. The comprehensive eye exam takes approximately one hour.

Contact Lenses: The contact lens clinic, utilizing state of the art equipment, provides full service contact lens fittings. This includes routine cases, as well as specialized cases such as high astigmatism, presbyopia and keratoconus. A variety of contact lenses are used to include disposable, 1-day-diposable, lenses to change the eye color, lenses to compensate for color vision deficiency, bifocals, toric and UV blocking lenses. UT Medicine Eye Clinic

This new, state-of-the-art facility occupies over 11,000 square feet of space on the second floor at the Texas Diabetes Institute (also known as the University Center for Community Health). Eye examinations are provided by UT Health Center ophthalmology providers. Services include routine ocular evaluation and treatment, as well as subspecialty eye care in retina, glaucoma, corneal and external diseases, ocular inflammation, oculoplastics, strabismus, and neuro-ophthalmology.

This clinic has a spectrum of diagnostic capabilities, including fundus photography and angiography. A variety of laser and minor surgical procedures can be performed on-site.

A unique aspect of this facility is the Diabetic Eye Clinic which offers comprehensive eye care to diabetic patients, emphasizing routine screenings, close follow-up and education. It provides for the early detection of treatable conditions and timely intervention. This clinic is the ophthalmology component of the Texas Diabetes Institute (TDI), a collaborative effort between University Health System and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The TDI is dedicated to the coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach to health promotion, patient education, professional training, treatment and research in diabetes.
