Course Description

Participation:

The goal of the senior selective experience is to help the student learn how to perform an ophthalmological examination using external examination techniques, Schiotz,and applanation tonometry, the direct and indirect ophthalmoscope, gonioscopy, and refraction, and to become familiar with the common systemic disorders which have ocular manifestations. The student will learn to recognize and understand the treatment of the most frequently encountered ocular diseases. If the student has taken the Ophthalmology Clerkship during the third year surgical subspecialty rotation, then he can expect to expand his knowledge and advance his clinical skills.

Observation:
There will be an opportunity to observe ophthalmology faculty and residents performing specialized examinations and treatment, including surgery.

Course Description

The student will design and carry out a clinical project, review literature, perform chart review, etc., with approval and guidance of instructor.

 

Mandatory Sessions / Conferences: Will participate with faculty instructors in seeing private patients, observing surgery, attending scheduled teaching conferences and Journal Club.

Course Description 

Participation:

The student will actively participate in research activities within the Department of Ophthalmology at The University of Texas Health Science Center. The student is expected to carry out a research project, which may be clinical or involve laboratory research. A logical and step-wise approach to research will be emphasized, from literature review, collection of data to analysis and a reporting of the results. Some time may also be available for exposure to clinic patients and performance of ophthalmological examinations.

Early Application to UTHSCSA Ophthalmology Residency Program

If you are considering ophthalmology as a future career, you should know that residencies in this field are very competitive. Preparations should begin early in your medical school career. Emphasis is placed on academic performance, evaluations from clinical rotations, involvement in research and extracurricular activities.

Prospective residency applicants must contact the San Francisco Matching Program for submission of all applications. For advice and guidance, you can contact our Education Coordinator, Debbie Schifanella. In addition, attendance to Ophthalmology Club meetings is highly recommended.
