Advanced Medical Spanish Seminar

Seminar Description: The fourth year medical students will meet for 4 two hours sessions (for a total of 8 hours), with the course instructor. The instructor will present patient case vignettes in Spanish and lead a discussion of the case. The students will then be asked to read medical literature in Spanish. The case vignettes will be in one of these health disparities (Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, and HIV/AIDS).

Goal: To enable fourth year medical students to completely present and discuss the basic history and physical examination of a patient case vignettes and review of the medical literature speaking Spanish only.

Objectives: At the end of the course the student will be able to do the following with a Spanish only medical team:

  1. Delineate the chief complaint and medical history of a patient
  2. Understand the complete review of systems.
  3. Obtain the pertinent personal and family antecedents.
  4. Understand the findings of the general physical examination.
  5. Discuss and formulate a differential diagnosis
  6. Formulate a treatment plan that is culturally sensitive
  7. Review the Spanish Only Medical Literature
