More feedback from medical students who participated in the MHCOE Mentorship
Program:
"I really believe the mentorship program is one that should continue to
be in existence. It provides students a unique opportunity to start a
friendship with a physician in the area, and a chance to form a network
early in the medical school curriculum."
"As far as the mentoring program, I have to say that thus far I have
really enjoyed my experience and I'm sure I will continue to gain from
it. my mentor has been a wonderful mentor. He has taken me in along
with his other mentees and allowed us to not only be his mentees but be
part of his family as well.
I've been able to get great advice from a physician who shows true
concern for me as a person and for my career choices being that I am a
first generation student I didn't really have anyone close in my family
to turn to when it came to decisions based on what to do and what not to
do as I go along in my career. my mentor has been there to tell help
me along my transition and to let me know that "things are going to be
okay," especially when I get frazzled at times ...Along with my mentor
the Hispanic center of excellence has been a great help. The people
there are beyond wonderful and the resources they provide for us are
awesome. It definitely has made my first year a lot less stressful.
"...I think the program is much-needed and has been well-developed, and
I would definitely encourage incoming students to utilize it in the
future. Honestly, the programs offered through the Center of
Excellence were highlights of coming to this school for me, and since
the pre-matriculation program, they have done nothing but help me become
a more organized and more inspired student. In fact, I had read about
the Center on the school's website before I even interviewed here. I
have tutored and been tutored through the Center, and I look forward to
the medical Spanish selective; anything that helps me practice medicine
within the Hispanic community has enhanced what I'm doing here, and I've
benefited greatly from it all."

The Mentorship Program is also recruiting Hispanic medical students outside
the San Antonio area. With today's advanced technology we can
extend the program to these students using
Electronic Mentors (e-mentors). The mentor will keep contact with the student via
email at least once a month.
With
the help of a Mentor:
- Medical Students can enhance their
performance in the classroom and hospital setting
- Leadership skills can be
developed
- Medical students
can further develop their identity as Hispanic
physicians/researchers
- Medical students can explore a variety of career
options and paths.
Requirements:
- Students participating in
the program will be required to have a minimum of one encounter a month
with their mentor.
- Attend the quarterly leadership seminars and monthly meetings.
- Physicians/mentors participating in the program will be required to have a minimum of one
encounter a month with the student/mentee. These encounters for
e-mentors will be through email.
- When possible, attend the quarterly leadership
seminars and monthly meetings.
