Cherri Hicks, M.S.N., APRN, chair of the Committee for the Advancement of Women and Minorities, holds the 2012 DiversityFIRST™ Corporate Achievement Award that was recently presented to the UT Health Science Center San Antonio. Headline News: Regents establish scholarship in Chancellor Cigarroa’s name

The University of Texas System Board of Regents has authorized the establishment of a scholarship endowment to honor Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D. The scholarship endowment will support students attending the new medical school in South Texas. Roy Robinson, a Vietnam veteran from Carlsbad, N.M., said his doctors gave him one or two years to live with no hope of regaining quality of life. However, Steven R. Bailey, M.D., a cardiologist at UT Medicine San Antonio was able to restore Robinson’s quality of life by using Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement for the treatment of critical aortic stenosis. Ask elementary school kids to make artificial “mucus” and have them push it through a cardboard tube representing an inflamed airway, and they get a better understanding of asthma. Liz Tullis cradles her son, Conrad, and lays him gently down, stroking his feet for reassurance. He has to be relaxed — better yet, asleep — for magnetic resonance imaging. The 10-year-old has anoxic brain injury from a pool accident nine years ago. Headline News: Screening program to test baby boomers for hepatitis C

Hepatitis C virus appears to strike South Texas Hispanics disproportionately, and some persons are not diagnosed until the liver-harming infection is in its late stages. And statistics show that baby boomers born between 1945 and 1965 are at heightened risk.
