Dong named to American Heart Association committee
Lily Q. Dong, Ph.D., assistant professor of cellular and structural biology and member of the Health Science Center’s Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, has been appointed to a prestigious peer review committee of the American Heart Association (AHA), Western Review Consortium. The recognition is a collaborative effort between the AHA’s Texas and Western States Affiliates.
Dr. Dong was selected based on her demonstrated accomplishments as an independent investigator in her field, and her ability to evaluate scientific proposals in an objective and scholarly manner. Membership represents a significant commitment of professional time and effort, and participation is vital to the AHA’s research program, which is dependent upon the volunteer contributions of leading scientists throughout the country.
Dr. Dong’s research focuses on the mechanisms leading to insulin resistance, an important risk factor in the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
“We have recently identified a key protein named APPL1 that functions downstream of the recently cloned receptors for adiponectin (a hormone secreted in adipose tissue, one of the components in body fat) and it plays a key role in the cross-talk between insulin and adiponectin signal transduction in cells,” Dr. Dong said. This finding, which was published recently in the Journal of Nature Cell Biology, provides important information on the potential new targets for therapeutic treatment of insulin resistance and related disorders such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Dong said.
The peer review committee of the AHA provides a critical science review of applications according to established AHA standards. It is charged with reviewing and grading applications on the basis of scientific merit. Peer review committees are composed entirely of clinical and basic scientists who are actively engaged in research or who have had appropriate research experience.
The AHA thanks Dr. Dong and the Health Science Center for support. “The AHA can only accomplish its research goals with the continued support of institutions such as the Health Science Center.”
