AAEF awards $100,000 for endodontics professorship
By Rosanne Fohn
The American Association of Endodontics Foundation (AAEF) recently awarded a $100,000 matching grant to the Department of Endodontics, part of the Dental School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
The grant was awarded for the Carlos E. del Rio Distinguished Professorship in Endodontics. The Department of Endodontics is chaired by Kenneth M. Hargreaves, D.D.S., Ph.D., a professor of endodontics, surgery, physiology and pharmacology, and The USAA Foundation President’s Distinguished University Chair in Neurosciences.
“This AAEF matching grant provides a unique opportunity to strengthen endodontic research and education by catalyzing the contributions of our generous endodontic alumni association,” Dr. Hargreaves said.
Fabricio Teixeira, D.D.S., Ph.D. holds professorship
The del Rio endowed professorship is held by Associate Professor Fabricio Teixeira, D.D.S., Ph.D., who directs the Advanced Educational Program in Endodontics and is responsible for leading the program’s scholarly and clinical activities.
Dr. Teixeira is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, a consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, and associate editor of the publication Endodontic Topics. He also is on the scientific advisory board of the Journal of Endodontics and serves as a reviewer for many other international journals.
He conducts research in the field of endodontics and has lectured nationally and internationally on topics related to the specialty. He has published more than 55 peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as 109 abstracts, book reviews, microfilm manuscripts and proceedings.
Establishing the department's national reputation
Carlos del Rio, D.D.S., professor emeritus, was the first director of the advanced education program in endodontics and the first chair of the Department of Endodontics at the UT Health Science Center.
He is credited with establishing the national reputation of the Department of Endodontics through his selection and development of faculty members, his administrative skills, his writing of an outstanding endodontics textbook, and his and the faculty’s dedicated mentoring of endodontics residents that continued after Dr. del Rio’s retirement from the Health Science Center following 16 years as an active faculty member.
“Modern endodontics evolved through the dedication, vision and research of the devoted professors whose commitment to resident education has inspired excellence. They shaped the future leaders among the specialties in dentistry and the future educators who continue the legacy of our exceptional endodontic program today. Endowments like this one make a real difference and contribute to the future of our specialty,” said Dr. del Rio.
The Endodontics Department is in the midst of a campaign to raise a matching $100,000 from alumni, gifts that will raise the distinguished professorship to the next level — the Carlos E. del Rio Chair in Endodontics.
