South Texas Injury Prevention and Research Center to honor winners of 'How I Stay Safe' Drawing Contest
San Antonio (April 9, 2003) — More than 3,100 San Antonio elementary school students ages 4 to 11 got out their colors this spring to draw pictures of what being safe means to them. Such early training could make the difference on the sometimes perilous speed bumps of life.
The South Texas Injury Prevention and Research Center (STIPRC) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio conducted the Fifth Annual "How I Stay Safe" Drawing Contest. Two of the 24 winners will be honored at 9 a.m. Friday, April 11, at an assembly at Carvajal Elementary School, 225 Arizona.
The STIPRC, in cooperation with 24 elementary schools in the San Antonio and Harlandale school districts, developed this safety awareness program to be used as an educational tool for children and teachers. Children are encouraged to use their creativity and draw pictures of safety messages such as fire prevention, seatbelt use and stranger danger.
The winning drawings are published in an annual wall calendar for each school district, and the STIPRC uses the calendars in educational outreach. Each winner is presented a prize in front of fellow students, teachers, parents and other invited guests. Prizes include bicycles, helmets, Toys R Us gift cards, Fiesta Texas season passes, and passes to the San Antonio Zoo.
The STIPRC works to raise awareness of injury prevention in at-risk communities through a network of volunteers, businesses, collaborations with print and television media, production and distribution of printed materials, outreach to South Texas schools and research initiatives. These programs are conducted in partnership with the University Health System as a component of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids, a national program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
