UTHSC scientist receives national recognition
for tissue engineering research
A San Antonio scientist will receive national recognition for her work with tissue engineering. The Society for Biomaterials will present Barbara Boyan, Ph.D., the "Clemson Award for Contributions to the Literature." Dr. Boyan is a professor and vice chair for orthopaedic research at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC).
The Society for Biomaterials is a professional society created to further the study of materials used in tissue regeneration, repair and replacement. Dr. Boyan was honored for her studies on cell response to material surfaces including those used for implants and tissue engineering scaffolds, as well as natural surfaces.
"I am very honored to have won this award," Dr. Boyan said. "It really goes to all of the students and the staff who have worked in our laboratory over the past 10 years and recognizes the contribution of my colleagues at the Health Science Center and the Southwest Research Institute."
Dr. Boyan will receive the award during the Society for Biomaterials' 28th Annual Meeting and Exposition in Atlanta on April 25.
