Emilio Romero, M.D., professor and deputy chairman for veterans’ affairs in the department of psychiatry at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, displays a plaque he was awarded by Polish leaders. Dr. Romero was recently invited by Brig. Gen. Janusz Adamczyk, surgeon general of Poland, to lecture in both Warsaw and Kraków, Poland, on the topic of post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Romero spoke to a group of health care professionals about treating soldiers who return from their work in the Middle East with post-traumatic stress disorder. Poland joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) four years ago. Polish troops worked alongside American soldiers in the Middle East when the War with Iraq ensued. Polish military and educational leaders thanked Dr. Romero for sharing his knowledge and expertise that they said would greatly benefit health care providers and Polish soldiers and their families. Dr. Romero also was received by Major Gen. Leszek Stawoj Glodz, field bishop of the armed forces. Afterwards Dr. Romero was received by Pope John Paul, II, in the Vatican.
