New Faculty: Nancy McGowan, Ph.D., M.S.

Nancy McGowan, Ph.D., M.S., assistant professor in the department of chronic nursing, joined the Health Science Center faculty in January 2004. Prior to her arrival, Dr. McGowan was the chair of Instructional Resources Associate Degree Nursing Program and chair of the Test Review Committee for the Associate Degree Nursing Program at The University of Texas at Brownsville.

Dr. McGowan is a member of the Southern Nursing Research Society, the Emergency Nurses Association, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She is also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau honor society for nursing.

She has received an Army Commendation Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the May 2002 Health Science Center’s Women’s Faculty Association Leadership Award.

Her research interests include health disparities among minority women, particularly smoking cessation interventions.

Dr. McGowan earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, in 1975 and earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from George Mason University, Fairfax, Va., in 1981. She earned a master’s degree in clinical nurse specialty, adult nursing from George Mason University, in 1992, and in 2001, earned a doctorate in nursing from the Health Science Center.
