Four faculty members and a fellow from the Health Science Center have recently received grants from the American Heart Association Texas Affiliate program totaling $700,000 for their research related to cardiovascular function and disease.
Four Beginning Grants-in-Aid (BGIA), at $124,000 each, were given to promote promising beginning scientists who are conducting cardiovascular research. The recipients of the BGIA awards are listed below.
Katherine M. Howard, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the department of biochemistry, received the award for her research in “The Role of Platelet-Activating Factor Acetylhydrolase Post-Translational Modifications in the Progression of Atherosclerosis.”
Senlin Li, M.D., assistant professor in the department of medicine, received the BGIA award for research in “Macrophage Gene Therapy of Atherosclerosis: Liver X Receptor Enhancement.”
Andrej Musatov, M.D., Ph.D., research assistant professor in the department of biochemistry, received the BGIA award for research in “Oxidative Damage to the Mitochondrial Electron-Transport Complexes.”
Devang Patel, M.B.Ch.B., F.A.C.C., clinical assistant professor in the department of medicine, received the BGIA award for research in “A Novel Non-Polymeric Metallic Nano-Porous Surface for Stent-Based Drug Delivery.”
The Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant, totaling $80,000, is given to help initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research, and further research training. The recipient of this grant is Lila P. LaGrange, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the department of physiology, who received the grant for her research “Angiotensin II Modulation of PVN-RVLM Neurons in Hypertension.”
