Police, firefighters and emergency medical technicians rush to the site of an exploded car bomb in front of a middle school. Injured students are strewn about on the pavement. As emergency personnel are responding to the situation, a suicide bomber walks into a crowd of students who have gathered. Police tackle the bomber before he has time to detonate his bomb. Although the drama unfolding seemed very real to the medical students in attendance, it was only a simulation of what could really happen.

This simulation, held on Wednesday, June 23, in Parking Lot #11 at the corner of Babcock and Louis Pasteur, was put together to demonstrate to third-year medical students how EMS personnel from various agencies work together to ensure safety at the site of a car or suicide bombing. Students were able to see what a patient might experience before they arrive at the hospital and gain a better understanding of pre-hospital medicine.

“Nowadays, citizens live with the threat of terrorism every day,” said Terry Eaton, EMT instructor at the Health Science Center. “The purpose of the demonstration is to illustrate the possibility that terrorists might use a secondary device as they do in this demonstration.”

EMT department personnel, San Antonio Fire Department rescue and EMS units, Leon Valley EMS and Health Science Center police volunteered their time to participate in the demonstration. Boy Scout Troop 398 volunteered their services as victims of the car bombing.
