Kenneth Shine, M.D., executive vice chancellor for health affairs for The University of Texas System, will be the keynote speaker at the third annual Summer Institute for Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), “Fostering Quality.” The summer institute is from July 15 to 17.

Dr. Shine will close the institute with his presentation “Guiding the Future of Quality Healthcare: Next Steps.” Dr. Shine is responsible for the six U.T. System health components and their collective operating budgets of $5 billion.

Dr. Shine has served as president of the Institute of Medicine (IOM). While at the IOM, Dr. Shine organized symposia to address the importance of cultural sensitivity in health care and supported programs to increase immunization rates, decrease use of tobacco among adolescents and improve care for the dying. Under his guidance, the IOM developed educational tools for the public, guidelines for community-based research, and publications for researchers and practioners. He is the founding director of the RAND center for Domestic and International Health Security.

Major topics in this year’s summer institute will include: urgency of using evidence to improve clinical care; research evidence available for national priority clinical conditions; principles and practical essentials of organizational change; outcome measurement; infrastructure development; and impact of EBP on selected roles within the health professions, including the clinician, quality manager, teacher and researcher.

The institute will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel San Antonio Riverwalk, formerly the Adam's Mark Hotel, 111 Pecan St. East. Continuing education credit in nursing and medicine is available. For more information on the conference or to register, visit: www.acestar.uthscsa.edu/institute/2004_brochure/index.html or call Abigail Sanchez at (210) 567-1480.

The institute is sponsored by the Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice (ACE). ACE was established as a center of excellence for the School of Nursing in January 2000. It is dedicated to bridging research into practice.
