Visitors to the Health Science Center’s home page now have a campus calendar that lists daily events, and lets them submit their own items.

The Calendar of Events is open to the public and designed to put listings from many sources in one place.

Users will be able to view listings by day, week, month or year and sort listings by the type of event. They will also be able to submit an event for approval and posting and save listings in their Outlook or Palm personal calendars.

The university’s new Calendar of Events is at https://calendar.uthscsa.edu. There is also a link to the calendar on the university homepage beneath the News section on the right side of the screen.

Events suitable for the calendar include grand rounds, lectures, deadlines, fundraisers, student functions, training courses, and journal clubs. All events listed on the calendar need to be public and of interest to the Health Science Center community.

“This tool is expected to be very valuable for employees, students and visitors to our Health Science Center,” said A. Jerome York, vice president and chief information officer. “We can all now go to one place to determine what events and activities are taking place; this is another case of information technology enhancing communication to our constituents.”

Events may be added through the year 2010 so people can spot possible scheduling conflicts far into the future. The department of medicine was among the first to test and adopt the calendar. Robert A. Clark, M.D., chair of the department of medicine, said having a unified calendar will be valuable, particularly in planning special events.

“We have had several examples of conflicts between important events in different departments or schools that could have been avoided by having easy, campus-wide access to a unified calendar,” he said.

Departments are welcome to establish and operate a calendar at no charge. The calendar will also help the public.

“Health professionals off campus or in private practice want to view the list of grand rounds, lectures and seminars,” Barrett said. “The calendar will give them a quick way to check the schedule.”

The calendar will display continuing education courses and in-house training sessions.

The calendar system is administered by the computing resources department. The university relations office handles content. Designated personnel in the respective departments control the individual calendars.

“Future plans include adding information providers and linking to a system that will display maps of campus locations so that users will be able to find events,” York said.
