Health Science Center faculty and students will participate in a panel at the Latina Letters 2004 Conference “Reporting Our Present, Shaping Our Future,” July 15 to 17 at St. Mary’s University.
The panel discussion for this year’s program is titled, “El Silencio de Latinas: Narratives and Poetry from UTHSCSA.” Through narratives and poems, the panel will discuss the self-silencing that comes from domestic violence, eating disorders and other medical conditions.
Charleen Moore, Ph.D., professor in the department of cellular and structural biology, and Martha Medrano, M.D., M.P.H., assistant dean for continuing medical education and director of the School of Medicine’s Hispanic Center of Excellence, will serve as the panel’s moderators.
“I have been privileged to listen to my patient’s stories of illness,” Dr. Medrano said. “What occurs in that interaction between a health professional and patient, the respect of this human interchange, begins the process of healing and is fundamental to the art of medicine.”
The narratives will present services and resources, such as the Center for Violence Prevention in the Health Science Center’s School of Nursing. A question-and-answer period will follow the narratives and poems presented.
