Miguel C. Fernández, M.D., associate clinical professor of surgery, has been named chair of the U.S.-Mexico Border Health subcommittee for the National Advisory Committee of the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA).
The subcommittee provides information and expertise, through the NHMA, to national policymakers and health care providers focused on border health issues.
Dr. Fernández is medical director and interim division chief of the South Texas Poison Center. At the NHMA’s 8th annual conference he presented a public health prevention clinical workshop on Poison Control Centers and Latino Communities that focused on the theme “Hispanic Health Strategies Across the Nation.” He is also on the planning committee for the NHMA’s national conference to be held in Los Angeles in April 2005.
Established in 1994, the NHMA is a non-profit association representing 36,000 licensed Hispanic physicians in the United States. The mission of the organization is to improve the health of Hispanics and other underserved populations.
