New Faculty: Rebecca Carreon, M.S.N.,F.N.P.-C.

Rebecca Carreon, M.S.N., F.N.P.-C., instructor in the department of family nursing care, joined the Health Science Center faculty in April. Prior to her arrival, she worked in private practice, community health and geriatric care as a nurse practitioner.

She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, a nursing honor society. She is the recipient of the Nurse Imagemaker Award and the Gibson-Lewis Award from the Texas Cancer Council. She has also received the Board of Directors – Volunteer of the Year Award, the Sword of Hope in Community Services award and the Speaker’s Bureau Health Professional award, all from the American Cancer Society.

Carreon has developed chronic disease education programs on diabetes, asthma, smoking cessation, coumadin therapy and mental health and wellness. She has also developed continuing education courses for registered nurses, social workers and nursing home administrators.

Her research interests include community health, wellness and disease prevention. She is particularly interested in the health of minority populations and the underprivileged of San Antonio and South Texas.

She earned a bachelor of science degree from Texas State University and a master’s degree in educational psychology from The University of Texas at San Antonio. She earned a master’s degree in public health from The University of Texas at Houston and a master’s degree in community health nursing from the Health Science Center. She also received her nurse practitioner education from the Health Science Center.
