The Research Methods Conference “Qualitative Research: An Integral Core of a Transdisciplinary Research Program” is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, August 5, in Room 1.463 in the School of Nursing.

Benjamin Crabtree, Ph.D., professor and director of research in the department of family medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, will present an emerging research strategy that integrates qualitative and quantitative traditions into a transdisciplinary research program.

The conference will highlight thinking beyond qualitative and quantitative, provide a review of qualitative research traditions and methods, explain why framing research as qualitative or quantitative is inadequate and provide examples of studies that integrate qualitative and quantitative methods.

Dr. Crabtree has written numerous articles and chapters on both qualitative and quantitative methods, covering topics such as time series analysis, log-linear models, case study research and qualitative analysis strategies. He is also co-editor of Doing Qualitative Research, now in its second edition.

Dr. Crabtree has been the principal investigator on federally funded grants from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Cancer Institute and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. He is the director of a National Research Service Award (NRSA) funded Health Services Research Fellowship and is associate editor for the Annals of Family Medicine.

This workshop is sponsored by the Teaching Excellence and Academic Skills (TEXAS) program. TEXAS programs are conducted by the division of educational research and development in the department of academic informatics services.
