White Coat Ceremony welcomes new students

First-year medical students recited an oath at the White Coat Ceremony on June 27. Students received their coats and a copy of the book “On Doctoring,” a collection of stories, poems and essays at the symbolic ceremony.

The ceremony is meant to be a reminder to the students of the responsibility of becoming a health care provider. The White Coat Ceremony was established with the incoming class of 1997.

Nancy Kellogg, M.D., professor in the department of pediatrics, who received the 2004 Leonard Tow Humanism Award for Faculty at the ceremony, told the students, “This day is a benchmark, not only for the beginning of your medical career, but also for the beginning of a life-altering journey.”

She encouraged the students to be perpetual learners and to earn their patient’s trust and not just expect it to be given. She also told them to view crises as an opportunity and to find an aspect of medicine that makes them passionate.

“May your journey through the next four years and beyond be as enlightening and gratifying as mine has been,” Dr. Kellogg said.

Twenty five oral and poster presentations were presented by pediatrics faculty, residents, fellows, and staff.
