In January, the Health Science Center welcomed Steven V. Owen, Ph.D., professor in the department of pediatrics in the School of Medicine and statistical scientist in the office of epidemiology and biostatistics.
Dr. Owen is from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he was a professor in the School of Nursing and in the department of preventive medicine and community health.
He is also a faculty member of the South Texas Health Research Center. He is a member of the National League for Nursing, the Southern Nursing Research Society and the Society of Behavioral Medicine. He is also a member of the American Psychological Society and Sigma Theta Tau International.
His research interests include measurement and instrument development, social cognition and applications of structural equation modeling.
Dr. Owen is a recipient of the 2004 Writing Excellence Award from the Journal Neurological Nursing and received The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching at the Doctoral Level in May 2000. He is also a recipient of the Nurses’ Week Poster Presentation for his collaborative work on “Preoperative Teaching Received and Valued in a Same-Day Surgery Setting.” He has also received the Letters Writers Award from The Hartford Courant.
He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from North Central College, Naperville, Ill., master’s degree in research design and statistics and a doctorate in educational research from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.
