Health Science Center faculty and research staff are invited to attend an upcoming addiction medicine conference in San Antonio. The Second Annual American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Region VII Symposium is set for Sept. 17-18 at the Drury Inn and Suites Riverwalk, 201 N. St. Mary’s St.

The conference will focus on many areas of addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, cultural sensitivity in the treatment of minorities, medical ethics issues and nondiscrimination in health coverage, and this year’s theme, an update on the neurobiology of addiction.

C. Gordon King, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at the Health Science Center, and Howard C. Wetsman, M.D., are the course co-directors. Dr. King is active in addiction treatment and research. Dr. Wetsman is a board-certified forensic psychiatrist with ASAM certification who specializes in the pharmacological treatment of both chemical and process addiction.

ASAM is a 501(c)3 non-profit member organization that educates physicians involved in the treatment of substance abuse and concurrent substance abuse and mental illness. Conference participants will earn 12 ACCME credit hours. The conference also is approved for continuing education units for master’s-level licensed chemical dependence counselors.

The course brochure is available at the link below. For more information, call Elizabeth Stolier at (504) 780-2766 or send an e-mail to estolier@bellsouth.net.
