Teaching Excellence and Academic Skills (TEXAS) presents professional development workshops and courses to enhance teaching and scholarship at the Health Science Center. TEXAS programs are available without charge.
TEXAS programs are conducted by the division of educational research and development in the department of academic informatics services. The primary professional development program in September will be the 28th annual UTHSCSA Teaching Excellence Course (UTEC) that starts September 15. Participants complete several self-assessments of their cognitive style and explore the components of expertise. Strategies that promote development of expertise are discussed. Reasons for learning deficiency are analyzed and strategies to assess the nature of learning deficiencies are introduced.

How do learner emotions influence learning?4 to 6 p.m.

Workshop topics include factors that influence learner motivation; students’ perception of the learning environment, evolution of learner self-concept and discussion of the implications for teaching. Strategies for working productively with defensive students will also be addressed.

Participants learn the GNOME model for course planning process including writing goals, objectives and syllabi and then use the model to create a course plan.

How can we use adult learning principles in our teaching?4 to 6 p.m.
Room 4.484T in the Dental School
Participants review the characteristics of adult learning theory (ALT) including the PRIM2E model and identify how ALT can be incorporated into teaching responsibilities. Participants also complete a self-assessment of how frequently they use 20 evidence-based teaching methods.

Participants learn 7 strategies that enhance learning from lectures, critique a lecture presented during class and experience a large group interactive lecture.
