The Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) is hosting the 6th annual Run 4 Life on Sept. 11, 2004.

The 5K run raises money to support free screening mammograms, follow-up care to uninsured women at risk for breast cancer, free prostate screenings and cancer research. Many of the patients helped by this fund have been treated in the University Health System. Funds from the run also support a children's education program, called Team Health, throughout city schools. All of the proceeds stay in San Antonio. In the first five years, Run-4-Life has raised approximately $500,000.

The entire family is welcome to attend the run through Brackenridge Park, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the parking area at the St. Mary’s Street entrance to the San Antonio Zoo. The run will be followed by a Children's Team Health Fun Run at 9:30 a.m., which is a short course designed for kids 12 and under. All children who participate in the Fun Run will receive a prize at the finish line.

Several Health Science Center departments, including anesthesiology and radiology, have contributed to the event by putting together the 5,000 race packets and recruiting participants for the health fair and the run.

A community health fair will also be at the event providing information on cancer screening, nutrition, diabetes and several other programs. Free blood pressure measurements will also be available at the fair. The Health Science Center departments of radiology, obstetrics and gynecology, dental hygiene, surgery, urology, ophthalmology, dermatology and the School of Nursing will be providing these services and information. Family Practice Student Association members and the first and second-year medical students may also be participating in the fair. Several other San Antonio Organizations will also participate in the health fair.

“This year’s race may be the best yet,” said Diane Icenogle, M.D., assistant professor in the department of radiology and event organizer. “We have chosen to hold the event on Sept. 11, realizing this is an emotional day for many people.”

In addition to the run, there will be a short patriotic program that will include the Reagan High School Soundsations. The remainder of the event will include a 50's style Rock-N-Roll theme with live music. A children’s area will provide face painting, games and food.

Both competitive and non-competitive runners are encouraged to participate. For more information on how to register for the run, visit the CTRC’s Web site at www.ctrc.net or call the CTRC’s cancer information message line at (210) 616-5555.
