The School of Medicine is pleased to announce that Helen S. Mayberg, M.D., will serve as the distinguished speaker for this year’s Medical Student Research Day Tuesday, Sept. 14.

Dr. Mayberg will present “Towards a Neural Systems Model of Depression: Strategies Using Functional Imaging” at 4 p.m. in the Health Science Center’s auditorium.

Dr. Mayberg is a former Health Science Center faculty member who served from 1991 to 1998 as assistant professor and later as associate professor in the departments of psychiatry, radiology and medicine, in the division of neurology. During those same years she also served as a senior scientist with the Research Imaging Center.

After receiving her doctorate of medicine from the University of Southern California, she completed her residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and a clinical fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. She was a member of their faculty from 1987 to 1991 and a member of the University of Toronto faculty from 1998 to 2003 before assuming her current position as professor in the departments of psychiatry and neurology at Emory University School of Medicine.

During a special session at noon, Anthony Infante, M.D., Ph.D., associate dean for research, will provide information concerning research opportunities funded by a variety of agencies, including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Derek Dombroski, MS-IV, will also make a presentation. Initially selected for a one-year fellowship as part of the HHMI-NIH Research Scholars ‘Cloister’ Program, Dombroski was among a small group asked to stay for an additional year of research at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md. After returning to the Health Science Center last year, he then qualified for continued fellowship support that has funded his last two years of medical school.

Research Day will also feature the presentation of student research posters, which will be on display to the public from 2 to 4 p.m. in the auditorium. More than 30 students have already registered. Any first through fourth-year student is eligible to present, as long as they have been involved in a research project while as a student at this institution, whether the research was conducted at the Health Science Center or elsewhere. Students are asked to register by Sept. 10. To register, call the medical dean’s office at (210) 567-4774.

Following the seminar, an awards ceremony will be held for student research presentations. Awards will be presented by the Medical School Alumni Association, along with other cash prizes funded by the medical dean's office. A total of $4,000 was awarded last year.

For the past four years, the medical dean's office has sponsored Medical Student Research Day to encourage student participation in medical research. To see the program agenda, which lists the day’s activities, visit www.uthscsa.edu/HSCNews/archive/ResearchDayProgramAgenda.pdf
